NEWBORN CARE SPECIALIST
A "Baby Nurse" is a non-medical Newborn Care Specialist that puts their complete focus on the newborn. A "Baby Nurse" is not a RN or LPN. The title "Baby Nurse" is an industry term. Newborn Care Specialist is my career title choice.

Newborn Care Specialist HOURS AND RATES
Duration of Newborn Care Specialist assignments;
Typically 8 days to 3 months

SHIFTS
24 hour, day shifts or night shifts (8 hours minimum)
Please note that for 24 hour care a proper bed is required
Night shifts a comfortable chair is required
All shifts live in required

GENERAL Newborn Care Specialist GUIDELINES
Family will pay a deposit to reserve Newborn Care Specialist. One Third of agreed upon rates.
Vaginal delivery - mom is in hospital for 2 nights
C - Section - mom is in hospital for 3-4 nights depending on insurance or doctor's wishes

IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU OR SOMEONE CLOSE TO YOU CONTACT Newborn Care Specialist AT THE ONSET OF LABOR MYRA LEFFLER 201-788-5468. This is important so Newborn Care Specialist can be there for you the day you arrive home from the hospital.

  • On all 24-7 assignments, Newborn Care Specialist is entitled to 5 hours of sleep per day
  • Family is responsible for Newborn Care Specialist meals while in home
  • Easy to prepare foods, fruit, sandwiches or warmed up family meals left over
  • Newborn Care Specialist does not eat at family meals
  • Newborn Care Specialist is entitled to 1 day off after first 10 days then 2 days off every 5 days thereafter (exception 2 week assignment) Days off are unpaid
  • 24 hour rate is calculated per 24 hour period - starts at the time of arrival to your home
  • Family agrees to pay the Newborn Care Specialist in cash every 7 days.
  • Major Holidays at double pay but family can choose to send Newborn Care Specialist home and day would then be unpaid
    New Years Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day, July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas

Infant Care

Diapering
Umbilical and circumcision care
Infant baths (sponge bath & tub)
Swaddling
Burping techniques
Temperature taking
Wake up at night with baby
Monitor baby's nutritional intake
Infant nail care (to show parents)

BY LAW, A Newborn Care Specialist IS NOT ALLOWED
TO CUT BABY'S FINGER NAILS AND TOE NAILS

Education

Teach parents to care for baby
Goal For parents to feel comfortable to care for infant when I leave

Scheduling

Working with parents to set up a schedule for baby's care after I leave.

Mother Care

Breastfeeding assistance, guidance and support
Mother the mother
Comfort measures
Nutrition and hydration

Other Responsibilities

Daily support
Sibling interaction
Baby's laundry
Organize and keep nursery clean
Bottle sterilization

Pets

General rule (as much as they are a part of the family, pets are not to be trusted)
Do not let pet lick babies face


THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLE A Newborn Care Specialist PLAYS IS TO MAKE
THE PARENTS FEEL COMFORTABLE IN THEIR
ABILITY TO CARE AND NURTURE THEIR NEWBORN.
GOOD COMMUNICATION IS A
MAJOR PART OF THE SUCCESS OF A Newborn Care Specialist
